Welcome to Tucson
Tourism is another major industry in Tucson, which has many resorts, hotels, and attractions. A reckonable economic force is middle-class and upper-class Sonorans, who travel to Tucson to purchase goods that are not readily available in Mexico. In addition to vacationers, a significant number of winter residents, or "snowbirds", are attracted by Tucson's mild winters and contribute to the local economy.(Information provided by Wikipedia .)

Celebrate Tucson's 234th Birthday In August
Celebrate Tucson's 234th Birthday In August

Tucson's 234th birthday is officially Thursday, August 20, 2009. Residents and guests to our city are invited to celebrate by attending one or more “birthday” events throughout August.

Tucson’s Birthday web site at http://www.tucsonsbirthday.org has complete information on all the celebrations taking place. People who wish to host their own event may submit a listing. (It should be open to the public and include a “Happy Birthday to Tucson!”)

Events include historic walking tours, hands-on art programs, the story of Tucson in live music and dance, open houses at unique locations, living history programs, and creative birthday activities for children and families. Many locations will also have free birthday cake.

Centenarian and community leader Cele Peterson initiated the month-long Tucson's Birthday celebration in 2006. She chose August for the celebration because Tucson has a long history of celebrating both the saint’s day of its patron St. Augustine (San Agustín), for whom its cathedral is named, and the anniversary of the founding of the Presidio de Tucson on August 20, 1775. She felt it was important to celebrate for a month around that date in recognition of evidence that the area was populated 4,000-years ago, and in honor of the many cultures who have influenced Tucson’s development before and since the Presidio de Tucson was established.
