How to calculate the Availability figure to arrive at Promised Availability for SLA purpose.?
Eg. If I arrive at the following uptimes with agreement from concerned tech leads, the way I calculate the availability is to multiply all of these components.
Application Uptime – 99.50%
DB Uptime – 99.00%
Server Uptime – 99.50%
Network Uptime – 99.90%
Storage Uptime – 99.80%
Promised Availability – 97.72% (Product of all above)
Is there any other way to calculate or is this most appropriate, keeping in mind that you have only this kind of data available for calculation?
This is the most conservative (ie. it will give you the lowest number) because you’re assuming that all your down times are mutually exclusive.
ie. you’re assuming that each system is down at one point in time and that there is no overlap. If you know that one Uptime is dependent on the other (for example if it’s configured so that if the DB was down then all Applications will always be down too) then you can take the smaller of the two dependent values in your multiplication and discard the larger value (because wherever one is down the other is always down with it).
